Alexander McQueen's Love Letter

Sarah Burton talked about the Alexander McQueen Fall-Winter 2020 fashion show, which took place as part of Paris Fashion Week, and its inspirations…

Sarah Burton, Creative Director at Alexander McQueen, said: “This collection is a love letter to women themselves, their families, friends and colleagues. We traveled to Wales, inspired by its artistic warmth, poetic heritage, folklore and craftsmanship spirit. In the collection, women reflect the brave, confident and heroic spirit. Clothing inspired by quilts and blankets creates a feeling of protection, comfort and security. “The hearts represent being there for others, emphasizing the spirit of unity.”

Visiting Wales, home of Celtic legends and creativity, Burton attended the 'St. Fagans was impressed by a quilted design in the National Museum of History'. Admiring the craftsmanship and embroidery of this design, which dates back to 1842, Burton designed a remarkable collection using elements from the Bible and the Industrial Revolution. Dresses resembling flags with graphic patterns embroidered in English mills reminded Victorian clothing.

After Alexander McQueen, who was inspired by antique patches and British textiles for his Spring 2004 collection, Burton also referred to the brand's founder. Colorful hairstyles accompanied the costume-like outfits, while wide necklines and oversized shoulders emphasized the historical influence of the collection. The show ended with a fairy tale inspired finale, as the women walked like war heroes in the fashion show, which opened with the sounds of birds and children.
